I’ve left some clues for you. If you want them, turn the page. If you don’t, put the book back on the shelf, please.
At the urge of her lucky-in-love brother, sixteen-year-old Lily has left a red notebook full of dares on her favourite bookshop shelf, waiting for just the right guy to come along and accept. Curious, snarky Dash isn’t one to back down from a challenge – and the Book of Dares is the perfect distraction he’s been looking for.

As they send each other on a scavenger hunt across Manhattan, they’re falling for each other on paper. But finding out if their real selves share their on-page chemistry could be their biggest dare yet…

My Thoughts:
This is a book I’ve read every Christmas for the past few years, but it’s just occurred to me that I’ve never posted a review of it on my blog! Out of all the Christmas YA books I’ve read in the past, this is by far my favorite.

Lily’s older brother Langston persuades her to write a series of notes in a notebook that she leaves inside the bookstore where her cousin works. Despite believing nothing will come of it, by chance the notes are discovered by Dash. From then on, the pair exchange notes containing dares with the help of their various friends and family. Eventually, Dash and Lily get to meet each other and discover the identity of the person they’ve been communicating with.

There is nothing about this plot that isn’t intriguing. The mystery of the two main characters not knowing who the other is, and the anticipation of them finally getting meeting and seeing what comes of it makes for such an entertain read that really keeps you hooked. It’s perfectly paced and there’s never a dull moment to be found. The setting of the novel is also magical, New York at Christmas, is there anything better?

Aside from the awesome plot, the characters are utterly fantastic. Both Dash and Lily have such contrasting personalities, and I enjoyed getting to read the story from both of their perspectives. Dash is so witty and I adored his snarky remarks, whereas Lily was quite the opposite and I admired her determined and willingness to go out of her comfort zone for the sake of the dare book. She’s also unapologetic about who she is and doesn’t care for the opinions of other people. I loved both of them equally!  Dash’s friends and Lily’s family are also super interesting and provide plenty of hilarious scenes throughout the story, especially Boomer. He had me laughing out loud more than once. I completely fell in love with the wonderfully diverse variety of characters we get to know.

This book is such a cute and fun read, prefect for the Christmas period. David Levithan and Rachel Cohn are a fantastic writing team, and if you’ve never read anything by either of these authors before, this is the perfect place to start!
