The Brain Behind The Blog #4: Rachel's Really Random Reviews

Hello, bookworms! It's time for me to present to you August's featured blogger. This month we have my very own bestie and fellow piece of trash, Rachel from Rachel's Really Random Reviews!

You and Your Blog
How long have you been blogging, and what was it that inspired you to get started?
I created my blog in January 2012, but I didn't really start using it properly until around June of the same year. I initially set it up as somewhere to write a little about my life, along with various other things such as book and movie reviews, but as university was keeping me extremely busy I didn't really use it until the summer break. Right before the break, I decided to check out a few books from the very limited YA section of my university library. As I had no idea Goodreads existed back then, I decided to use my blog to keep track of the books I had read over the summer. I had finally found a purpose for my blog, and although I only meant to keep it for the summer, I enjoyed writing down my thoughts so much that I decided to continue with it after summer was over!

What is the best part about blogging for you?
I love getting emails from self published authors asking me to review their books! There are so many amazing books that are not published in the traditional way, and without my blog I wouldn't have the opportunity to discover so many.

Have you had any blogging disasters?
Nothing too drastic, but I am constantly making spelling mistakes! I'm also pretty lazy when it comes to HTML, so I do a lot of copy and pasting from previous posts to get the formatting the same for each post, and on a couple of occasions I've forgot to delete something I've pasted in from a previous post, which I haven't realised until a reader has pointed it out in the comments!

What has been your favourite blogging memory?
Although I adore getting requests from self published authors, it was a pretty big moment for me when I got approached by Orion publishing asking me if I wanted to review Charlaine Harris' new series. I used to be a huge True Blood nerd, so being asked to review a book by such a well known author felt like a huge step.

What do you hope to achieve with your blog in the future?
Discovering even more amazing books! I would also love to try to be a little more active in the blogging community, as I tend to just quietly do my own thing and not interact with others much.

You and Books
What appeals to you when searching for new books to read?
I feel as if Goodreads is a good tool for finding books that are similar to ones I've enjoyed. I also love it when people recommend their favourite books to me. I try to find a balance between reading what's popular and reading self published books.

Are there any genres that you avoid?
I tend to read mostly YA, although I do also review one of the classics every other month. I don't read adult books too often, but ones that I definitely would never read are adult romance and erotica. Inside of YA however, there isn't really anything that I actively avoid.

What book would you say has had the biggest impact on your life?
I really don't want to be a cliché and say Harry Potter, but I have to say Harry Potter. It has been my all time favourite series since I was eight years old, and I don't think I'll ever find a series that will be able to beat it. When I was a child, I was very much like Hermione. I was one of the smartest kids in my class, I loved reading and I didn't have many friends. Having Hermione in my life really helped me to see that I wasn't alone, and that there were other kids like me. She made me realise that being smart and enjoying books wasn't a bad thing, and she honestly ended up being my role model.

What book are you currently anticipating?
I was going to say Lord of Shadows but that's not coming out for ages! I honestly think I'm going to die of old age before Cassandra Clare stops writing Shadowhunters books. I also really want to read Juno Dawson's new book, Margot and Me. The fact that it's set partly in the 1940's sounds really interesting and I can't wait to read it!

Tell us who your favourite fictional characters are!
I have so many I'd be here all year trying to name them all so here's a few that randomly pop into my head:
* Draco Malfoy
* Scorpius Malfoy
* Hermione Granger
* Luna Lovegood
* Adam Parrish
* Ronan Lynch
* Magnus Bane
* Alec Lightwood
* Will Herondale
* Jem Carstairs
* Baz Pitch
* Cath Avery

All About You
What are your hobbies? (Besides books and blogging, of course.)
I'm obsessed with way too many movies and tv shows. I also love playing video games and could easily spend a whole day on my Wii. I'm also addicted to listening to showtunes! I attempt to write my own stories occasionally, but I don't think i'm very good at it!

The Brain Behind The Blog #2: Swissbookworm

Hey everyone! It's time for my second interview in The Brain Behind The Blog feature. Today I'm pleased to welcome the fabulous Yasmine from Swissbookworm!

You and Your Blog
How long have you been blogging, and what was it that inspired you to get started?
I started my blog in January 2016, so I'm still kind of a newbie in the blogging world. My love for books totally got me hooked on a lot of book blogs and I wanted to create a space that's my own where I can share my opinion on books and all things related to that subject with those who are interested in hearing (or rather reading) it.

What is the best part about blogging for you?
Besides having my own 'website' it's having the possibility to meet new people and talk about things you love with them. I've met so many awesome bloggers on the internet in the past few months. It's a really great feeling when you can just talk about books all the time and people will join the conversation without hesitation.

Have you had any blogging disasters?
The biggest disaster would be myself because the past two months I've been struggling with posting book reviews and joining my favourite memes and things like that because of work.

What has been your favourite blogging memory?
The moment my blog went public the very first time. It was all so new and I just plunged into this new world without even thinking it through. My layout was a disaster, I didn't really think about what I was writing in my reviews and I was just very unprepared. But the feeling of witnessing the 'birth' of my blog will always be one of my favourite memories.

What do you hope to achieve with your blog in the future?
I'd love to interact with more people and get more people to read reviews. But that means that I first have to be happy with what I write and I'm just not quite there yet.

You and Books
What appeals to you when searching for new books to read?
The summary has to be convincing. If I don't like the idea of the plot, then I won't like reading it either, so it has to leave an instant impression on me.

Are there any genres that you avoid?
Horror, Thriller and I rather avoid crime novels as well.

What book would you say has had the biggest impact on your life?
The entire Harry Potter series. I grew up with it and I'm your typical Potterhead. I will never stop loving these books and it has become a lifestyle for me. Without Harry Potter in my life I would only be an empty shell of the real me.

What book are you currently anticipating?
The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Screen Play and also Gemina are my top two anticipations at the moment. There are still so many great books coming out this year I wouldn't even know where I should start.

Tell us who your favourite fictional characters are!
Ughh, I don't even know where I should start and who I should mention. Definitely on the list (which is endless, by the way) are Hermione Granger, Percy Jackson, Will Carstairs (The Infernal Devices), Levi (Fangirl), Kady Grant (Illuminae), ... the list goes on and on, but I thought I'd make a stop here before I can't stop myself anymore.

All About You
What are your hobbies? (Besides books and blogging, of course.)
I'm a dancer and I'm in training to become a professional one :) I probably won't be able to make a living of it, but I'll give it my best shot. I'm a very sportif person in general, so count me in in all things sports. Also I like to game and visit comic shops frequently.

What are three goals you’d like to achieve in the next few years?
1. I want to get my bachelor at university in computer science. 2. I want to move out. 3. I want to learn Russian. (not necessarily in that order, though)

If you could travel back in time to chat to a person in history, who would it be?
Mary Stuart - Queen of Scotts. I'm fascinated by her story and I've read a lot of books about her and I'm a big fan of Reign (although I've only discovered the series a short while ago).

This or That
Coffee or Tea? Coffee (but when I'm in my healthy mode: Tea)
Library or Bookshop? Bookshop! (I've got this obsession with having to own all the books I read)
Summer or Winter? Summer with at least 30 degrees celcius :)
Sunrise or Sunset? Sunrise (you've still got the entire day ahead of you)
Cats or Dogs? Dogs! (One day I'll either have a Husky or a Labrador Retriever)
Facebook or Twitter? Twitter :)

The Brain Behind The Blog #1: The Bookish Beauty

Hey everyone! This is the first post in a new monthly feature I'm going to be doing, The Brain Behind The Blog! The aim of this feature is to highlight the awesome book bloggers out there who dedicate their time to writing bookish content, and to discover more about them. This month I'm pleased to welcome Brittany from The Bookish Beauty!

You and Your Blog
How long have you been blogging, and what was it that inspired you to get started?
I had been writing on a personal blog sporadically for a few years before starting Bookish Beauty. I was inspired to start my Bookish Beauty blog because I wanted a place to share my hobbies and have great conversations with others!

What is the best part about blogging for you?
The best part for me is making connections with others who have similar interests and geeking out about all of our favorite things.

Have you had any blogging disasters?
Nothing that I would call a disaster...just little mishaps here and there. I will sometimes re-read old posts and realize that I wrote them too quickly and didn't put enough of my personality in them, but I'm learning!

What has been your favourite blogging memory?
Just knowing others are interested in what I have to say is so great, I feel like I'm not just talking to myself! Every time I make an internet friend through my blog is my favorite!

What do you hope to achieve with your blog in the future?
I hope to build a great community of people around my blog that feels like family.

You and Books
What appeals to you when searching for new books to read?
I am definitely a sci-fi and fantasy type of gal! Although I am trying to branch out into other genres.

Are there any genres that you avoid?
I typically try to stay away from romances and YA that have prominent love triangles. However, they always seem to creep on to my to-read list.

What book/series would you say has had the biggest impact on your life?
Arena by Karen Hancock is a book that gets be through everything. For some reason this book just feels like home to me and I always re-read it when I'm having a hard time. I highly recommend checking it out, especially if you like sci-fi/fantasy!

What book are you currently anticipating?
I previously said I tend to stay away from romances, but I just started Me Before You and I am so excited to get into it! Especially because the movie comes out on my birthday!

Tell us who your favourite fictional characters are!
I absolutely LOVE Callie Hayes from Arena, she reminds me so much of myself and the kind of person I want to be. Sometimes unsure, but in the end incredibly strong and brave

All About You
What are your hobbies? (Besides books and blogging, of course.)
Makeup is a newer hobby of mine, but I've really been enjoying it! I'm also a big TV and movie junkie, I could talk about my favorites for dayyys.

What are three goals you’d like to achieve in the next few years?
-I currently live in Texas, but I would love to make my way up to Seattle, Washington and settle in there.
-Advance in my career and be in a position where I have people reporting to me.
-Love life and be happy with where I am! This is a constant goal of mine

If you could travel back in time to chat to a person in history, who would it be?
Elizabeth I, I have always been fascinated by her life and rule as Queen. I'm not a big history nerd, but there are a few parts of it that I just can't get enough of!

This or That
Coffee or Tea?
Tea! Caffeine tends to make me pretty shaky so tea is always my go to!
Library or Bookshop?
Bookshop for sure. I love finding tiny book stores and spending hours in them!
Summer or Winter?
Winter, I love cooler weather. As you can imagine (or maybe you've experienced it for yourself) Texas is just miserable during the summer.
Sunrise or Sunset?
Sunset, ending a long day on a big porch with a cup of tea in my hand just sounds like heaven.
Cats or Dogs?
I am 100% a cat person! I keep trying to convince my husband to let me bring one home, but he is super allergic and I don't want him to miserable all the time.
